Cycling Equipment Requirements
Suitable Tyres
It might seem obvious, but you must make sure you have suitable tyres for puncture free riding. If you are running on old tyres, think about getting a set of new tyres for the ride – as sitting around waiting for a pick up won’t be much fun.
Participants are responsible for their own cycle, which must be fully roadworthy.
You must have at least:
- A hand pump, spare inner tubes and a small multi-tool. We also recommend you have money, a mobile phone and spare clothes in case of any adverse weather conditions.
- You must also have a water bottle/cage and be carrying some food.
Timing Chip Attachment
The timing chips are pre-attached to rider numbers. You will be given cable ties to attach the rider number to your handlebars.
Please attach the before you start and make sure you pass through the gantry when you finish.
Course Signs and GPX/TCX Route Files
A link to the Garmin GPX/TCX files will be sent via email on Friday – this is so we are able to send out the correct routes after checking there are no issues around the courses. The link will also be available on the website.
We do our best to try and make sure your ride on the road runs as smoothly as possible by marking the roads clearly. If you find you have not seen a marker for a while, stop and consult your map, ask someone, or find a landmark and give us a call using the number provided on the back of your number.
The Routes, Feed Stations and Toilet Stops
There is an official feed stop on the 100k/50k routes that will help you get the extra energy needed through cakes and flapjacks (not to mention the cheese and crackers!)
The Long route (100km) has 2 available feed stops. These are at 22km/81km. These are at the same place – Great Hormead Pavillion. You are advised to make sure you have a filled bottle and had a snack at the first feed stop as the Long loop is a 60km! There is also free tea/coffee facilities at this stop if you aren’t too worried about your time!
The Medium Route has one available stop at 33km. This is at Great Hormead Pavillion Hall. Free tea/coffee will be available at the feed stop.
There are toilets available at the stop.
The Route Splits
The Short route (25k) splits from the Medium and Long routes at just under 11km at a junction leading towards Berden, where the short (25k) will turn left and the long/medium (50k/100) go straight. It will be fully signed and will be obvious which way you need to turn.
The Medium route (50k) splits right from the Long route (100k) at about 14km at a place called Clavering. It then joins onto the 63km point of the Long route about 1km up the road. The feed stop comes in at 33km for the 50k route, and will split from the Long route for a second time 1km past this stop, turning left to continue its final 17km. There are a few hills in the final push so make sure you grab a gel or flapjack to help you back!
The Long Route (100k) splits left from the Medium route (50k) at about 14km at a place called Clavering. It then has its first feed stop at 22km, and then splits from the medium route for a second time about 1km after this point. If you haven’t made it to this long split point by 11.15 (23km in), then you will only be able to follow the medium route as the long route split signs will be coming down. This is so you are guaranteed to make it round in time. The Long route turn right the first time they pass this split point and continue a long loop of 60km back to this same point. They will then turn left the second time they visit this junction. All signs will have been changed by this point so you do not have to worry about doing the long loop twice! You then have a hilly 17km home, so grab a fig roll or two for the return leg.
All Routes
All routes will have mile indicators after each split point to confirm that you are on the correct route.
At the last feed stop, there is only 17 km to go (but a few hills) – so stop and get refreshed before making the final push.
Emergencies and Problems
If you have a problem on route emergency numbers are on the reverse of your ride number – should you require the emergency services please stay on the course to enable them to assist you quicker.
If you need mechanical assistance we recommend you text your problem and location to the mechanic who’s number is on the reverse of the rider number. Texting your location makes it much easier for the mechanic to quickly respond to you.
You are required to wear a helmet, please ride carefully and respect the locals, horses and motorists.
